My GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter doesn’t record mic audio when charging via USB-C (but does work when charging via USB-A). Is this a known issue or is my adapter defective?

August 5th, 2025

Hi Richard,

Thank you for contacting us regarding the issue you’re experiencing with your Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter. I understand how important it is to record audio seamlessly, and I’m here to help resolve this concern.

From your description, it seems that your mic adapter records audio properly when charging via USB-A, but not when using USB-C. Let’s work through some troubleshooting steps to determine the cause:

  1. Check Compatibility and Ports: Make sure that the USB-C port you are using is intended for both charging and data transfer, as some ports are for charging only.
  2. Use Original Accessories: Ensure you are using the original GoPro USB-C cables and adapters to rule out any compatibility issues.
  3. Firmware Check: Verify that your GoPro and the adapter’s firmware are up to date, as updates can resolve various functionality issues.
  4. Test Different Ports and Cables: If possible, use a different USB-C cable or try another USB-C port to see if the issue persists.
  5. Reset the Connection: Unplug all connections, wait a few moments, and then reconnect them to see if the issue is resolved.

If these steps do not rectify the situation, please let us know, and we can explore further options, including the possibility of a defective adapter.

We appreciate your patience and look forward to ensuring your audio setup works perfectly.

Best regards,

Hi GoPro Customer Support,

Here’s some more information regarding this issue:

I’m using the Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter with a Hero 11 Black (firmware v02.32.00). I’m using the GoPro USB cables that came with the camera. When I plug the Mic Adapter into a USB-C PD (power delivery) charger using the GoPro USB C-to-C cable, audio is not recorded from the external lavalier microphone. However, when I plug the Mic Adapter into a USB-A charger using the GoPro USB A-to-C cable, audio is recorded.

Thanks for your help!

Hello RB,

Thank you for reaching out to us with the detailed information regarding your audio recording issue. I understand how important it is for you to use your Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter effectively with your Hero 11 Black camera. I appreciate your patience, and I am here to assist you with this matter.

From what you’ve described, it seems that when you use the Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter with a USB-C PD (power delivery) charger, the audio is not recorded from your external lavalier microphone. However, the audio is recorded when you switch to a USB-A charger. I recognize this can be frustrating, and I assure you that we are dedicated to providing a solution.

To resolve this, please follow these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Ensure Firmware is Updated: Confirm that your Hero 11 Black’s firmware is up-to-date. You can check for updates on the official GoPro website.
  2. Verify USB-C Cable Compatibility: Although you are using the GoPro cables, confirm they are not damaged, as improper connection can cause issues.
  3. Test with Different USB-C Chargers: Try using different USB-C PD chargers, as some chargers may not be fully compatible with the adapter.
  4. Use Alternative Power Sources: Where possible, test with other power sources to ensure the problem is not isolated to a single charger.

Please let us know if these steps help resolve the issue or if there’s anything else we can do to support you.

I look forward to hearing from you soon, and I’m confident we can get your equipment working optimally!

Best regards,

Hi GoPro Support Team,

I’ve been looking into the issue, and I’ve found that the way I’m powering my setup seems to be affecting the external mic.

Here are the details:

  • I’m using a Hero 11 Black with firmware v02.32.00 and a Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter.
  • When I power the adapter with a USB-C PD charger using the GoPro USB-C to USB-C cable, no audio is recorded from my external lavalier microphone.
  • However, when I use a USB-A charger with the GoPro USB-A to USB-C cable, the external mic works as expected.

I hope this additional information helps you troubleshoot the issue. Thanks.

Hi RB,

Thank you for reaching out to us and providing detailed information about the issue you’re experiencing with your Hero 11 Black and the Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter.

I understand the concern and frustration this might cause, especially when you are trying to get the most out of your setup. From what you’ve described, it seems the external microphone functionality is affected when using a USB-C PD charger alongside the GoPro USB-C to USB-C cable. However, using a USB-A charger with the GoPro USB-A to USB-C cable allows the mic to work correctly. I appreciate your thorough investigation into the matter, as it indeed helps us better understand the situation.

I assure you that we are here to help resolve this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Ensure Firmware is Updated: Verify that your Hero 11 Black is running the latest firmware version. You can check for updates through the GoPro Quik app or visit our website for the latest firmware.
  2. Test Different Cables and Chargers: Continue testing other USB-C cables and USB-C PD chargers to see if the issue persists. Sometimes, not all cables and chargers are created equal, which may impact performance.
  3. Check Connections: Securely connect your Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter and microphone to ensure no loose connections.
  4. Perform a Hard Reset: Reset your camera settings to default and try reconnecting the setup again.

If the issue remains unresolved after these steps, please let us know, and we can explore additional solutions together or consider a replacement if necessary.

With gratitude for your cooperation, we aim to enhance your GoPro experience successfully.

Best regards,
